“Fewer than 18% of 11th-grade Black male students were proficient in math”

You would think Black Lives Matter would care about this, but God forbid they criticize public education. If a charter school produced stats like these, the leftists would be howling to shut it down.

Note the goal for Black male students: to have only 1/3 score an A or B in Algebra I! Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Math assessments, discussed during Des Moines School Board meeting on Tuesday, show in the spring 2022, fewer than 18% of 11th-grade Black male students were proficient in math, according to a draft of the board’s goals and interim goals proposal. In spring 2021, 27% of those students were considered proficient.

[...]

For the last four years, officials have worked to improve Algebra I grades for ninth-grade Black male students. The school board's current goal is to have 35% of Black male students earn a B or better in Algebra I both semesters by the end of the 2023-24 school year. At the end of the 2021-22 school year, only 8.3% of students scored a B or better both semesters.

And right on schedule, they propose to stop measuring because the numbers are so bad:

Several Des Moines school board members questioned if tracking Black male students' algebra achievement is the right measure to watch. Roughly 10% of the Des Moines school district's 31,323 students are Black males but an even smaller percentage of those are in algebra classes.

"I just wonder if that continues to be the right measurement for a real small universe of students that are reflected in the overall numbers," Board Vice Chair Teree Caldwell-Johnson said.
