You really can’t make this stuff up. As Campus Reform reports,
Western Carolina University (WCU) recently added more than 10 pronouns to its Canvas student portal, a curriculum management platform. The 12 new pronoun combinations include (E/Eir), (Fae/Faer), (Per/Pers), (Ve/Ver), (Xe/Xem), and (Ze/Zir), but some university employees admitted that they were unaware some configurations existed.
If you’re wondering what Fae/Faer refers to, it’s for the mentally ill who believe they are magical fairies or angels:
Fae/faer are frequently used by fairy- and fae-kin or fairygender individuals, but are neither mandatory pronouns for those with identities related to the fae nor exclusive to those identities. This set can be used by anyone, regardless of gender identity or expression, despite their creation being based around presenting as fae- and angel-like.
I know you’re rushing to change your pronouns in the HR system, but wait! Not everyone can be a fairy!
In the late 2010s and early 2020s, a small controversy arose over who could use fae/faer pronouns. Some individuals asserted that fae/faer was exclusive to those of Celtic background and those who worked with the fae; however, this is untrue for a variety of reasons. The fae as a whole are not exclusive to Celtic cultures and are found in mythology all over Europe (particularly Slavic, German, and French mythology), even stretching into North America with fae-like creatures appearing in Cherokee mythology. Fair folk also appear in both Pagan and Christian religions. Indeed, "fae" and "faerie" themselves originated from Old French, which were in turn derived from a similar word in Colloquial Latin.[4]
Some individuals have cited concerns over inciting the anger of the fae themselves; however, it is frequently understood that the fae do not in fact like being called "the fae" and prefer "the fair folk" or another alternative, and thus generally do not care about humans using "fae" as pronouns.
